Anxiety Treatment Denver, CO

Life is stressful, and there are any number of situations and circumstances that can cause occasional anxiety and stress, leaving you frustrated and tense. This type of stress and tension is not uncommon, but when anxiety is chronic and you feel as if nothing you do will make it go away, it can cause you to feel lost, alone, and disempowered.

Before seeking an anxiety therapist in Denver, you should understand that anxiety disorders involve more than temporary doubt, worry, or fear. There are six major types of anxiety disorders that Dr. Lauren Gorog specializes in, each one unique in its own way.

7 Major Types of Anxiety Disorders

1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a common anxiety disorder exemplified by chronic (persistent and recurring) excessive, exaggerated anxiety or worry about several things -- even when there is little or no reason for it. The fear and anxiety can cause significant problems.

2. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder which is best described by the unwanted presence of recurrent, thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Common repetitive behaviors include hand washing, checking, counting, or cleaning are completed in hopes of preventing these obsessive thoughts or making them go away. The relief provided by performing these repetitive tasks is short lived, and a person’s  anxiety is significantly increased if these rituals are not completed.

3. Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear (panic attacks) accompanied by powerful physical symptoms which can include chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, heart palpitations, and/ or abdominal distress. Panic attacks can occur at any moment: at night, panic attacks while driving, in the middle of the business day, while pregnant, etc. Panic attacks or having a panic disorder can significantly affect your quality of life, but treating panic attacks or panic disorder therapy and treatment can be very effective.

4. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is most often referred to as PTSD. This anxiety disorder can develop after exposure to a shocking, terrifying, or dangerous event or ordeal such as military combat or domestic abuse in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened. Traumatic events which can trigger PTSD episodes besides military combat include violent personal assaults, natural or human-caused disasters, and traumatic accidents. People who have PTSD may feel stressed, anxious, or frightened even when they are not in danger.

5. Social Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder). Social Phobia, or Social Anxiety Disorder, is typified by overwhelming feelings of anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. This phobia can be triggered by a single type of situation such as a fear of speaking in front of people whether in a public, formal setting or even a casual setting, or, in its most acute form, may be so extensive that symptoms appear virtually any time a person with this disorder is around other people. If you are looking for a social anxiety therapist in Denver or near you, feel free to contact Dr. Lauren Gorog to see if remote therapy can be offered to you.

6. Illness Anxiety Disorder (formerly known as Hypochondria) is an anxiety disorder identified by excessive worrying that you are or may become gravely ill. This is often-times accompanied by the belief that normal body sensations, or minor symptoms, are an indication of a serious illness, even if medical exams do not reveal a serious medical condition, which can result in extreme anxiety that may disrupt your life. 7. Climate Change Anxiety, Eco-Grief, or Eco-Anxiety: Concern about climate change may be having an impact on mental health, with more than two-thirds of adults (68%) saying that they have at least a little “eco-anxiety,” defined as any anxiety or worry about climate change and its effects. Additionally, researchers are finding that those experiencing effects of climate change, like flooding, hurricanes, wildfires, are starting to have symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

These effects may be disproportionately having an impact on the country’s youngest adults; nearly half of those aged 18-34 (47%) say the stress they feel about climate change affects their daily lives.

While not labeled in the DSM as an anxiety disorder, climate change anxiety or “eco-grief” is becoming more prominent in populations as “Climate change and the tolls on our mental health are far reaching,” said Arthur C. Evans Jr., PhD, APA’s chief executive office.
